Veneers Q & A

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a cosmetic dental option used to correct color and shape problems in teeth so that your dazzling, white smile returns. Veneers can also be used to close spaces between teeth and fix uneven, chipped, or cracked teeth. Some of these problems are the result of:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Staining or discoloration
  • Chemical damage
  • Excessive intake of coffee, tea, soda, and tobacco

Veneers use a very thin layer of porcelain material over your teeth. This thin material is very strong, durable, and built to last for many years with proper care. After veneers are placed, it will take a week or two to get used to them. Porcelain veneers are used to:

  • Improve tooth shape
  • Whiten teeth
  • Hide stains and discoloration
  • Corrects the gaps between teeth

How are veneers different from whitening?

Tooth whitening provides a whiter, brighter smile using whitening gel but it's best used on teeth with only mild discoloration. Veneers can be another option to achieve a brighter smile, and will likely last much longer than tooth whitening solutions. Porcelain veneers can also change the shape of teeth and enhance your appearance. Dr. Schmutter can help you decide which option is more appropriate for your specific needs.

What is the procedure for veneers like?

A veneer treatment plan will be created specifically for you. Veneers will be made to match your natural teeth. Dr. Schmutter will take an impression of your teeth and send it to a dental laboratory to create your veneers. During this process, a mold created from the impression of your teeth and used as a temporary veneer until your permanents are complete. You’ll need to wear the temporary veneer until the permanent veneer is prepared and specific adjustments are made. Your teeth are cleaned before the permanent veneer is finally fixed onto the tooth. With the help of a special curing light, the cement hardens.
